icon SAMSUNG ST100: Capturing beautiful moment

Here is a good review of the Samsung dual view ST100 by Handsonmobile. This slick looked camera offers some competitive features in the dsc market. Below is the summary of the review:

- 4 different colors violet, gold, hot pink, and black. The rounded appearance and coated surface is really awesome.

- Has an inner 5x zoom type optical Schneider lens with a focal length of 35-175mm which is much better length than other inner zoom lenses. By adopting the 1/2.3” CCD, it supports 14.2M pixels still images and 720p HQ movie recording.

- Has a hidden LCD on the front of the camera, but when atticated it does take on the color of the camera a little but its different from the normal front LCD because it big, 1.8”.

- 100x60x200mm and weighs 135g.

- 7 degree slanted design which makes self shots more convenient. Especially, the rounded button design, light, and play button supporting one touch play.

- supports smile shot function which automatically takes a shot when it detects a smile.

- It has 5 useful functions such as Self shot, Children mode which shows a funny animation to get the attention from children, Couple mode for 2 people, Jump shot, and Smile icon showing a smile icon when the shutter half pushed to tell you when to smile.

- It has 11.52M pixels and a 3.5” wide Full HD touch LCD. Most of the touch menus are inactive to prevent miss touching. The key icon on the lower side of the screen is to unlock the hold function, so pushing that button the functions become available to use.

- In order to get a great self shot or couple shot on must remember to not hold the lens area or you finger might cover up the lens. It’s best to hold it where the shutter button is.

- The ST100 has Smart Auto 2.0 which automatically detects 17 modes and helps take perfect shots. It supports 12 different scene modes and 9 kinds of photo sizes such as 4320×3240 14M pixels, 4320×2880 12M pixels, and 4320×2432 10M pixels. The 10M or higher allow users to watch images on HDTV and HD LCD monitor in full screen. It supports ISO 80 to 3200 and ±2 level of exposure compensation with the increments of 1/3.

- It also supports Gesture UI, effects, upgraded Smart Filter and Smart Auto 2.0 for users to remember the beautiful moment more beautifully as a Samsung’s beautiful camera.

Among the above pictures, the first 2 pictures were taken without EV and other 2 pictures were taken with -1.30 and -1.70 EV. Actually, it’s really difficult to take a picture of the sky with a compact digital camera, but the ST100 was very good at this. [...]

icon What`s Dust TF team!? : How the NX10 was developed

Samsung's NX10 development team shared some of their thoughts during the development of this great camera. Let's see what they have to say ^^. Enjoy!

I heard that defining a new standard is very challenging. What do you have to say?

Sungwook Choi (Opto-Mechanics Lab) : That’s true. If there is a predefined standard, you only need to develop the functions and spec based on that; however, for the NX10, we had to virtually start from scratch. This included developing everything from the body to the lens, flash and even the buttons.

Hongju Kim (Product development Group) : Because of that, there was a lot of going back and forth of reports and business plans between the product planning team and the development team. We call this ‘pingpong,’ which basically means that if the planning team sets the spec based on existing point-and-shoot camera and sends the draft to the development team, they will reply back saying something like ‘With this brand new camera, this is not enough to develop anything. We need more specifics!’ and will return the plan back to the planning team. Some members in the planning team were a bit frustrated in the beginning because they thought they did all they could do only to be rejected.

Youngbae Kim (Product planning Group) : The camera turned out to be a new-to-the-world thing, nothing like the point-and-shoot cameras or DSLR. Much confusion was caused because the concept was new to both the product planning and the development team. So, We ended up creating a cross-functional team of planning, development, and design and practically lived together for three months while working, eating and pulling all-nighters.

Myunggyu Kim (Mechanical Design Lab) : Many are still crammed in that room burning the midnight oil in order to develop the follow-up version.

Hongju Kim : It was not only the Samsung employees that had a hard time; the parts developers also had to struggle to come up with something brand new.

Myunggyu Kim : If you look at Japan, the camera industry is advanced across the whole value chain, so you simply need to pick and choose the parts you want. But, The market in Korea is not as developed, so we had to go through an arduous process of developing every single part from button to shutter with the parts manufacturer. It was the first time for them to develop such parts, so they probably had a hard time, too.

Hongju Kim : At one time, when we were developing a shutter and I accidently broke a sample shutter that cost something like $10,000. Luckily, we were able to repair it, but I was really worried at the time. I still have the sample on my desk.

So, it seemed like the development process was really bumpy. Were there any issues once you completed the product?

Sungwook Choi : QA(Quality Assurance) was also an issue. Being the new concept as it was, we didn’t have a good idea of what to do to pass the quality test. You can’t drop an interchangeable lens camera from whatever meters high as you would do with an existing point-and-shoot camera, you know.

Hongju Kim : Oh, and the dust! (Everyone suddenly laughs at the word ‘dust.’

Youngbae Kim : It was definitely dust that gave us a hard time towards the end.

Myunggyu Kim : We had no idea at the beginning. We simply thought that we would do the assembly at the clean room, just like when we do it for point-and-shoot cameras, but this turned out to be totally different. First, the camera is bigger than point-and-shoot so the dust was way more visible. In addition, having a clean environment was not enough. Every single part that went in was covered in plenty of dust when they were shipped from the parts supplier. It’s not like we use a handful of parts, so dealing with this became a huge issue.
All in all, we even set up a ‘Dust TF (Task Force)’ team and visited all the parts suppliers to ask them to do vacuum-wrapping and to manage dust throughout the whole distribution process.

A ‘Dust TF’?

Myunggyu Kim : Dust may seem trivial, but as it was critical, we put a lot of time and effort into it. It was, in fact, a great achievement for us to have controlled dust to the level that we did in such a short timeframe.

Sungwook Choi : ‘Dust TF’ team really worked hard. Pulling an all-nighter was a daily routine.

Myunggyu Kim : We even came up with our own way of swiping dust out. After a long research, we did a special coating on the optical filter that goes into the image sensor to prevent dust from gathering.

What is your assessment of the NX10?

Sungwook Choi : Not only the lens, but also the image sensor, DSP, AMOLED, battery and the molding were all developed using Samsung’s technology, ensuring quicker response and better quality. It is not an exaggeration to say that the camera is ‘the culmination of Samsung’s cutting-edge technology’.

Hongju Kim : Not only those who made the outer surface, but the software developers worked very hard as well. They practically lived together for almost half a year. Once the device is ready, the ball goes to the software team and it’s in their hands where the NX10 finally comes to life.

You have spent more than 3 years working on the NX10. Any symptoms?
Sungwook Choi : Hurting back? (laughs)

Myunggyu Kim : Phobia for a phone that rings around the clock?

Hongju Kim : When we developed the CIS (CMOS Image Sensor), we focused a lot of attention on noise. When I am walking on the street and see a square shape in the pathway, I think of noise.

Sungwook Choi : I guess you all dreamed of working? (Everyone nods in agreement)

Myunggyu Kim : It’s like trying to solve an issue you couldn’t during the daytime in your dreams. (Everyone laughs)

I hate being cold... even the air-condition bugs me everyday. Ironically, I can't stand the hot and humid weather as well... guess, I'm the one complaining a lot...^-^...

icon Nakji Bokkeum (Korean Spicy Octopus)

I've been to Seoul in 2006 and yes, I've tasted Nakji Bokkeum... all I can say is, it's awesome!! One of my favorite dish beside that is Ojingottobap (Spicy Octopus with rice)... One of thing I love about korean delicacies is it's red pepper paste... the taste is different and very much to my liking... really, really good! You can try this at home!

Video link: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVJcT6RegN8&feature=player_embedded

INGREDIENTS

½ cup Water
¼ cup plus 2 Tbsp. Gochujang (Korean Red Pepper Paste)
1 handful Octopus or Squid, cleaned and cut into bite size pieces
Dash of Salt & Pepper
1 Tbsp. Sugar
1 tsp. Garlic, minced
1 tsp. Ginger, minced
1 handful Onions, shaved
A few Leek slices
1 tsp. Sesame Seeds
3 Tbsp. Gochugaru (Korean Chillie Powder)

• Heat water and ¼ cup gochujang on high heat.
• Add the octopus or squid. Throw in a dash of salt and pepper. Stir.
• Add sugar. Stir.
• Add garlic, ginger and 2 Tbsp. gochujang. Stir.
• Add onions, leeks and sesame seeds. Stir.
• Add gochugaru. Stir until it seems like the onions melt into the sauce.
• Serve.

Kalau mau mencari kamera dengan reproduksi warna yang natural dan WB yang cukup stabil, NX10 adalah pilihannya.

Lensa kitnya pun salah satu yang paling bagus dari semua lensa kit bawaan ... Bravo Samsung !

icon Samsung’s 2011 New NX Lenses are revealed!

Posted by and credit to rhea

[Samsung has received positive reviews from different press by launching 30mm, 18-55mm, 50-200mm lens. By previously releasing a lens roadmap, Samsung had signaled that various models with improved features were on the way. Unexpectedly today, a part for the new NX lens has been released which NX users have been waiting for. Of course it’s not out in the market yet, and the exact release date and prices have yet to be revealed, but it’s possible to widely guess its design and function. Let’s take a look at the new NX lens through a video and pictures.

The 16mm lens is a light, compact F2.4 Ultra Wide Pancake Lens. The bright aperture of this lens helps to capture wider images even in low light and deliver a shallow depth of field. Its ultra wide angle is ideal for landscape shots and deep perspective pictures.

The 60mm Macro Lens features a Super Sonic Actuator (SSA) to deliver a fast, quiet Auto Focus (AF). It has F2.8 and as you could’ve guessed from the name of the lens, it is great for close-ups. Optical Image Stabilization (OIS) ensures steadiness and stability of every moment so you never have to miss the timing of that perfect close-up shot.

The ultra bright 85mm F1.4 Compact System Camera (CSC) lens features SSA, which like the 60mm lens provides fast and silent AF. It also includes Full Time Manual Focus which provides advanced photographers greater control over their preferred settings. This premium lens with bright F1.4 offers the ideal solution for capturing perfect and professional looking portrait pictures.

The 18-200mm multi-purpose Long Zoom Lens can be used diversely from taking landscape to portrait pictures. It features modes optimized for creating high-quality movie content with a single lens. Due to Samsung’s use of Voice Coil Motor (VCM) technology, the new Long Zoom Lens also has a fast and silent AF, which enables you to video important events without recording the sound of the camera’s AF. It also features OIS, which cancels out any hand movements and delivers crisp, clear images perfect for filming videos.

All of the lenses are compatible with Samsung’s unique i-Function system, which helps users easily create powerful effects utilizing the quick and convenient controls.

Mr. Hyunho Chung, Executive Vice President and Head of the Digital Imaging Business, Samsung Electronics, commented, “At Samsung, we are committed to ensuring that we remain at the cutting edge of imaging technology, and these five new lenses are a testament to that ambition and the growing strength of compact system camera photography. These are products that a professional photographer would be proud to use, but we make them so easy to use that a novice could get amazing results every time, and that is a credit to our strong R&D team. We are continuing to innovate in this exciting market and we have more significant developments planned for the future, which will add to our growing strength in the compact system camera market.”

The release of these lenses with great features is exciting news to previous NX users who wanted various lenses, and also for those who used DSLR despite the weight and size for the diversity of lenses.]

icon Samsung NX100 – Bean Pole Edition: Creative Meets Classic

On February 9, a ‘KOREA PHOTO MODEL CONTEST 2011!’ was held in Seoul to celebrate the launching of the NX100 Bean Pole Edition. The uniqueness of this contest was that the participating models held on stage the NX100. The NX100 Bean Pole edition that received the spotlight was actually a collaboration with Korean apparel Bean Pole. It's a limited edition in Korea which has been receiving really good feedback, in addition to the already well-known features of NX100.

Being different in design and features, NX100 has proven to give quality photos to its owners. The i-Function lens enables easy adjustment of various features including ISO (sensitivity) and WB (white balance).

"With its accessible yet sophisticated image, Bean Pole has become a popular brand across various ages and its brand logo, PENNY-FARTHING, has its roots in the early bicycle which looks like two British coins placed on top of one another. The Bean Pole logo reinvents classic yet modern image of the UK.

Recently, Nicholas Hoult, an actor who appeared in films such as ‘About a Boy’ and ‘Single Men’, and the UK drama ‘Skins’, modeled for the collection, creating much fuss. The leading teenage star Nicholas and the British heritage of Bean Pole made a perfect match, well illustrating the unique feel of the brand.
"

"The NX100 Bean Pole Edition half case (made from ostrich leather) has a classic design and its striking balance with the modern NX100 leaves the combo ever sophisticated. However, style is not everything. If you place the slim NX100 into the half case, it gives a better grip of the camera, making it easier to use the product, protecting it from scratch and from external shock."

Here is the latest review by PopcoNet. Enjoy!

1. Wifi and DLNA

- Even in the 10M pixels camera world, 3M pixels mobile phone cameras are still popular for self shots for personal web sites[....]
- users can upload pictures on the web through WiFi and Email transfer, it has editing function and great mobility as well WiFi wireless network sharing images
- 14M pixels image sensor for high quality pictures, 3x optical zoom lens and supports HD movie recording and ISO 80-3200 for shooting under any circumstances.
- Smart Auto allows users more convenient shooting, and it can also take unique pictures with Smart Filter, Image Compensation, Photo Style, and effects.

2. Touch & Design

- 3” 230K pixels touch LCD. The touch is a capacitive type and by offering a touch pen, it allows users more accurate operation. The viewing angle is quite good except the low angle. 4 levels of brightness are provided. - to prevent a mistake, it supports the touch hold function.
- one touch shooting and Smart Touch AF mode to control AF via touch
- various photo style
- smart crop, smart filter and special effects
- shinny metallic material on the front and the back
- The battery is the Li-Ion BP70A of 740mAh. (can take 200 shots and 80 minutes of movie, with 250 shots or more). The recharging time is around 150 minutes with the AC adapter and is rechargeable with the USB port, but takes more time.
- It supports MicroSD/SDHC and has 22MB of built-in memory.

3. Optical 3x zoom & HD Movie

- 35-105mm optical 3x zoom lens
- aperture value is F3.0(W)-5.6(T) and the zooming speed is a little slow.
- The AF is fast, but it was difficult to set AF on a small subject.
- supports DIS
- smart auto
- face recognition
- motion capture

4. Quality & Color

- 1/2.3” effective 14.2M pixels CCD
- ISO from 80 to 3200
- supports 7 white balance settings such as auto, daylight, cloudy, fluorescent H, fluorescent L, tungsten, and custom.
- ACB is a function to reduce the difference of exposure and make the dark area bright.
- AEB is the same function as the exposure bracketing and takes 3 shots continuously with different exposure values[...]
- beauty shot
- smart lens
